Girls Softball Report

Central Zone girls softball was held on Tuesday 2nd March.
The Year 8 girls won all games in their pool and made it through to the semi's against St Josephs. They won in points but lost on a technicality unfortunately. The girls played Wesley for 3rd and 4th and won, placing 3rd overall. St Josephs went on to play Kowhai in the final and Kowhai came away with the win.

CentralZone Tennis Report

On Tuesday 23rd February, the girls’ tennis team went to Windmill Courts on a beautiful, hot, sunny day that afforded perfect conditions. This team performed exceptionally well, considering that most were fairly new to the game and were up against experienced and seasoned opponents. No one managed to advance past the play-off stage but I’m very proud of the fantastic sportsmanship and positive attitudes they displayed.

The boys’ team was not so lucky. Setting off two days later, after dire weather was predicted, we ran into a torrential downpour that stopped play after only two minutes into the first match. The rain unfortunately continued and the entire event was cancelled. There was no saving day either, much to our disappointment.

The team was as follows:

Year 7 Girls Singles: Tupou Toumolupe 13
Year 8 Girls Singles: Beheshteh Abrahimi 21
Jessica Liu 29
Year 8 Girls Doubles: Freshteh Abrahimi 25 and Shika Handa 18

Year 7 Boys Singles: Jonathan Khoo 9
Year 7 Boys Doubles: Sanaj Deshpande 9 and Reval Verghese 9
Year 8 Boys Singles: Quintin Kwok-Heon 22
Year 8 Boys Doubles: Khushrav Mirza 25 and Emman Rahimi 18
Reserve: Mark Bingham
As they say, there’s always next year! (Well, for the Year 7’s at least).

Auckland badminton came to MRI on February to give all year 8 students an insight into the game.

Richard Marr (one of the most experienced coaches in NZ) explained how the game is played and introduced four of the countries most talented young players.

The Roadshow was a fully interactive program where some lucky students got a chance to test their skills against top NZ players.

Badminton Roadshow

As a follow on from the Roadshow the school will offer a “Just Smash It” After School Programme. With the help of Auckland badminton MRI will be running a programme for students who want to take up the sport. The sessions will be on a Tuesday afternoon starting in March.

Parasports Report 2010

Y7 Girls Soccer Report

Mt Roskill Intermediate and Primary schools jointly hosted our annual Parasports Day on Friday 19th March.

Over 150 students came from all over Auckland, 65 competing in the intermediate section. The students competed in circuit activities and then track races against others of a similar ability. Impressive skills were demonstrated in a range of sports from javelin, hurdles and discuss to obstacle courses, boccia and table cricket. It was awesome to see all MRIS students getting involved and showing off their place ribbons. Our very own Naomi Vailima took out the overall prize – a massive congratulations to her!

Thank you to students from rooms 22, 24 & 28 who did a great job running the activities and leading teams.

The year 8 team went through their games unbeaten. However, they didn't have enough points to go through to the semi finals which was unfortunate. Well done to all the girls in the squad who really put in 100% effort on the field.

The year 7 Soccer team had a challenging tournament. It was many of the girls first time playing soccer and they did well in some close games. The girls drew two games against Kowhai and Remuera Intermediate and were unlucky not to win.

These girls will go on to do really well next year as year 8's.

Year 7 Boys Soccer Report

The year 7 boys began the Central Zone tournament with a great deal of enthusiasm. We knew that each player had trained hard and was ready to take on the best of the zone soccer teams.
The boys started strongly, confidently moving the ball around the park and eventually scoring a good goal to beat Royal Oak 1- 0.
Our next game, against St Peters was a display of fine football with our Keeper making several outstanding saves and our mid field pushing the ball around to create a number of striking opportunities. Unfortunately the opposition were just too good and we lost by six magnificent goals scored by the St Peters strikers.
We were very unlucky to come away from the games against Waikowhai and Ponsonby without points. Although we played well our finishing was not good enough and once again it was only the form of our keeper that kept us from massive defeats. We lost 2 - 0 to Ponsonby and by a single late goal to Waikowhai.
In our final game of the day and with nothing to lose our boys played their finest football of the tournament. They dominated the midfield and created a number of chances before scoring a super goal to beat Remuera 1 - 0.

Although out team didn’t make it to the finals we can be proud of the effort and determination the boys showed and I am sure each member of the team came away stronger for the experience.

Y8 Boys Soccer Report

The year 8 boys football team competed at Central Zone against some tough well-organised opposition.

The team narrowly lost the first game and games two and three were the heaviest defeats of the day. The boys didn’t let their heads drop though and came back firing with a superb 4-0 win in game four against Kohia Terrace. The team was starting to click, and won convincingly 2-0 in game five against a team who had conceded very few goals. That set them up for a great game against Balmoral Intermediate, who had similar results as Mt Roskill. After a tense game in which Mt Roskill held most of the possession, the game finished 0-0.

The team finished 5th in a tight pool of 7, but only missed out of a third place finish by two points.

Year 8 Girls Soccer Report

"I was very impressed with the year 8 Girls soccer team . They were a team on and off the field .They all, without exception, played with all their hearts for the school. They went through the Tournament unbeaten but missed out to get into the semi finals. They showed huge heart in drawing with the eventual winners ANI . The player of the day goes to Ivyn who played brilliantly even after she was injured. Well done girls I am proud of you all".

Coach Andrew Morris had this to say about the Y8 team:

MRIS Hockey Report

CZ Table Tennis

The Junior Competition caters for players of Intermediate School age and offers weekly fixtures for our school’s four teams. The competition in run by Auckland Hockey during the winter months and Mt Roskill has teams at different levels. The Mustangs play in the Navy division, Brumbies in the Red division, Cheetahs in the Yellow, and Cougars in the Green.

All teams have experienced very positive results and are playing exceptionally well in their respective grades. Teams have weekly training sessions before school, at lunch times and after school.

As we arrived at the Gillies Avenue Table Tennis Stadium we all had butterflies in our stomachs. The stadium was alive with talented players from other schools. Our team consisted of two boys singles, two boys doubles and two girls doubles.

Most of our players completed the preliminary round of six games with much success and over half made the quarter-finals. Our opponents played with great intensity. Although we were unable to proceed to the semi-final stage, we felt that the whole experience was magnificent.

Thanks to Mr Carroll
for his support.
